TLDR YouTube — Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how the TLDR YouTube Chrome extension ("the Extension", "we") handles your data. We are privacy-first: we collect the minimum amount of data necessary to provide the service.

1. What we collect

The Extension processes the following data only when you actively click the "Summarize" button on a YouTube video:

• YouTube video transcript: the text captions of the video you choose to summarize.
• Video metadata: video ID, title, duration, and the caption track language code, used solely to produce a relevant summary.

The Extension does not collect, transmit, or store:

• Personal identification information (name, email, IP address are not collected by us).
• Browsing history beyond the YouTube video you are actively summarizing.
• Account credentials, passwords, or YouTube login data.
• Cookies, fingerprints, or analytics data.
• Health, financial, or location data.

2. How we use the data

The transcript and metadata are sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our backend service hosted on Cloudflare Workers. The backend forwards the transcript to Anthropic's Claude API, which generates the summary. The summary is then returned to your browser and displayed. No copies of the transcript or summary are stored on our servers.

3. Local storage

Your generated summaries are saved only on your local browser using chrome.storage.local. This is done to power the in-extension Library feature so you can revisit past summaries. This data:

• Never leaves your device.
• Is not synced to any server.
• Can be deleted at any time from the Library tab in the extension popup, or by removing the extension.

Your settings (preferred output language, theme, display style) are stored using chrome.storage.sync, which Chrome may sync across your own signed-in devices. We do not have access to this data.

4. Third-party services

The Extension uses the following third-party services to function:

• Anthropic Claude API — generates summaries from transcripts. Anthropic processes the transcript per their privacy policy. They do not retain inputs or outputs for training when accessed via API.
• Cloudflare Workers — hosts our serverless backend that proxies the Anthropic API call. Cloudflare may log standard request metadata for security; see their privacy policy.
• YouTube — the source of the transcripts you choose to summarize. Your interaction with YouTube is governed by Google's privacy policy.

5. Permissions

The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:

• storage — to save your settings and your saved summaries locally.
• activeTab — to read the current YouTube video's transcript only when you click "Summarize".
• scripting — to extract the transcript from YouTube's player API in a reliable way.
• host permission for youtube.com — to inject the "Summarize" button on video pages and read the transcript.

6. Children

The Extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used the service, contact us and we will delete any related local data on the affected device with you.

7. Data deletion

To delete all locally stored data:

• Open the extension popup → Library tab → click the "×" on each saved summary, OR
• Open chrome://extensions/, find TLDR YouTube, click "Remove" — this clears all extension data.

Since we do not retain data on our servers, no further deletion request is needed.

8. EU/EEA users

If you are in the European Union or European Economic Area, you have the following rights under GDPR: right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, port, and object. Because we do not retain personal data on our servers, most of these rights are exercised by managing the local data on your device as described above. For any other request, contact us.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above and announced in the extension's update notes.
